We’ve done many projects with National Geographic over the years, but perhaps none has connected better with our ‘smart and soulful’ audience than the anthology series Genius: Aretha. As a bonafide American icon you might think you know all there is about to know about the Queen of Soul, but the series leaned heavily upon Aretha’s faith as an anchor in a life full of turmoil — it was a perfect fit and one we were happy to run with by bringing this story to leading media outlets in our space like Relevant, Christianity Today and CBN. We also arranged for the Gospel Music Association, of which Aretha is a Hall of Fame inductee, to participate in sponsoring the virtual premiere attended by over 10,000 people. The highlight of our campaign was the collaboration we created with the National Museum of African American Music to host a livestream panel with series stars Patrice Covington and Rebecca Naomi Jones (who play Aretha’s sisters Erma and Carolyn) on Aretha’s birthday. It was the first time NMAAM had collaborated with a major television network and a great success in spreading the word about the series to their national audience of music fans. Be on the lookout for Genius: Aretha when Emmy Award nominations are announced next year!
